We’re stoked to have Matt on board as a Bikmo ambassador and would like to welcome him to the team. We’ve been following Matt’s impressive progress since supporting the Velocity Global Bike team, where he rode for his years as a junior. Matt brings with him a youthful talent for the road and track, where he has enjoyed great success in both disciplines.

Having suffered an early setback to the season, Matt’s determination not to waste the hard work that he’d put in over the winter, definitely paid off as the year progressed, resulting in his most successful season to date and gaining a well deserved slot on the British Cycling GB Senior Academy.

Matt Walls

2016 Junior National Scratch Champion

Already a multi National Champion, Matt’s preparation for the 2016 season started with a team training camp in the sunny climes of Tenerife, mixing long steady miles with high intensity climbs and feet-up relaxing by the pool. Once back, with sharpened tan lines and his first UCI race in Belgium a week away, Matt took to the boards for some speed work. Unfortunately, a crash at the velodrome resulted in a broken collarbone, putting his season on hold for six weeks while he recovered…but boy, did he recover!

An impressive 7th place in his returning race boosted his confidence, giving him the motivation to win two Gold medals at the European Track Championships, breaking the Team Pursuit record in the process, with a Silver and Bronze medal at the World Championships. Now fully back in his stride, Matt took the green jerseys in both the Tour of Wales and Swiss UCI Reubiland stage races, making 2016 his best season to date.

Day 1

Matt leading the GB Team Pursuit squad

Moving to Manchester in October, Matt begin his intensive training at the British Cycling GB Senior Academy. Covering off-bike topics such as nutrition, first aid, bike cleaning, anti-doping and social media he soon settled in with his new team mates for his upcoming winter on-bike programme. With a couple a late season track meetings, including a guest appearance for Team Wiggins, Matt rounded off the season with a Silver medal in the National Madison Championships.

With so much success already, we watch the progress of Matt with much excitement. With the structure and support of the GB Academy to take him through the next stage in his career, we’re pretty sure that Matt will have his arms in the air many more times.
