What is bicycle insurance?

Cycle insurance provides extensive coverage designed specifically for cyclists. It safeguards against theft, accidental damage, and vandalism ensuring both you and your bike are protected whether at home or on the move.

Additional benefits include clothing and accessory coverage, event fee reimbursement, and personal accident support, providing financial security in case of injury.

Who’s it for?

Whether you are a family of leisure cyclists or competing regularly, cycle insurance is for anyone who wants to protect their ride. We cover everything from road bikes through to gravel or electric cargo bikes. No matter brand, age and upgrade – Bikmo cycle insurance has you covered.

What does it cost?

Bicycle insurance costs depend on the value of your bike/s. Our cover starts from £3.73 a month. If you have more than one bike at your address, you can also add it to the same policy and benefit from our multi-bike discount. That means 50% off additional bikes, taking your highest value bike at full price.

Bikmo Cycle Insurance FAQs

Do bicycles and electric bikes need insurance?

Bicycles and eBikes are not required by UK law to have insurance but it’s a good idea to consider it. Specialist insurers such as ourselves cover against things like theft, accidental damage and more, meaning you can spend less time worrying and more time riding.

Can you insure a bicycle against theft?

Yes – bicycle insurance covers against theft from both home and away. All of our policies include theft and prices start from £3.73/mo.

Interested in where most bike thefts happen? Check out our bike theft map to see all police reported bike thefts and where they took place!

Bike Theft Map
Do Bikmo insured used bikes?

Yes – with your Bikmo insurance policy you can insure your bike irrespective of age, brand, model, upgrades or whether you are the original owner.

You need to decide on a value against which to insure your bicycle, and that’s the value you’ll pay your premium on. If you’re unsure as to the value of your bike, your local independent bike shop should be able to help you, or you could base the value on the cost of a current like-for-like equivalent model and parts.

What we look for with our policy is proof of ownership rather than proof of purchase, which can come in a number of forms.

A purchase receipt is the most obvious example of this, but we can accept a photo (with a time and date stamp), a bank statement showing the purchase, or other information relating to the ownership of the bike/item being transferred to you.

Do you insure e-bikes?

Yes, we do insure electric bikes. And we give a 25% discount* on their premium too.

This includes MTB, road, hybrid and Brompton Electric bikes, providing that the e-bike meets the requirements of the Road Traffic Act – www.gov.uk/electric-bike-rules

The Road Traffic Act states that the e-bike’s motor must have a maximum power output of 250 watts, is pedal assisted, restricted to 15.5mph or 25 km/h and cannot be ridden by someone under the age of 14.

If you use a de-restrictor kit, your e-bike motor has more power as standard, or you have a button/twist & go throttle (not walk assist mode), then your insurance will be invalid and the bike comes under the Road Traffic Act, which means tax and licensing.

If you’re not sure, get in touch with the team and we’ll confirm whether your e-bike is eligible – Contact us

*Compared to non e-bikes. Excluding where 50% multi-bike discount is already applied. Minimum premium applies.

What are the locking requirements for my bike?

We apply the Sold Secure lock rating system to our policy requirements; it’s easy to follow and used by the cycling industry – www.soldsecure.com.

Locks are rated for their level of security, and we set a value of bike that is covered by each rating: Bronze (up to £250), Silver (£251 – £1500) and Gold (over £1500).

If your Sold Secure approved U lock comes with an additional wire cable, the cable is not included in the approved rating, it’s just the lock. This means that if you secured the bike through the frame to an immovable object, with the cable only, you wouldn’t be covered!

If you leave your bike unattended away from your home, it’ll need to be locked. There’s times at home too, depending on how you store it, so check out our Locking guide for full details on our requirements.

Locking requirements
What value should I insure my bike for?

There’s no limit on new for old with every Bikmo bike insurance policy, so it doesn’t matter if the bike is 3, 5 or 10 years old, you choose the value to insure for, and you’ll pay a premium based on that value.

We always recommend insuring for the current replacement value, and the value you state is the maximum value you’ll receive in the event of a total loss and successful claim.

So, if it’s a custom build or you’ve upgraded parts, simply add up the sum of the bike and parts, including pedals, with what it would cost to purchase them at today’s RRP, as doing this ensures that you’ll have enough cover if you need to make a claim.

Can I change my insured values if I upgrade my bike or buy a new one?

Yes – you can make as many changes and as often as you wish to the insured values/bikes on your Bikmo Cycle Insurance policy, with no fees for doing so, you just pay for the change in premium if there’s an increase. So if you’ve bought a new bike or treated yourself to a groupset upgrade, make sure your covered for the right amount.

If you’ve moved house, you can update your address too.

All of your adjustments can be made in your Bikmo Cloud account 24/7 – get in touch via our Contact page if you have any specific questions.

I’m travelling with my bike – is it covered in transit?

Yes – all Bikmo bike insurance policies cover your bikes whilst in transit when you travel with it by train, boat or plane. However you’ll need a GO or PLUS policy to cover accidental damage in transit.

Airlines generally only ever pay up to £1400 for any items damaged or lost in transit and you could be tied up in a waiting list to get your bike repaired. So we’ll repair or replace your bike regardless of the outcome of airline compensation.

Check out our travel policy if you need extended cover for your travels and make sure to see which cycling activity level is required.

Bikmo Travel Insurance
Does home insurance cover cycling?

Home and contents insurance can often differ to specialist cycle insurance so it’s important you check the policy wording carefully. Typical exclusions with home insurance policies include low maximum bike value, no cover away from home, no accidental damage cover, and no clothing + gear cover.

But with Bikmo? We have you covered because we know what cyclists need.

Bikmo vs home insurance

One of the most frequent questions asked is “What’s the difference between cycle specific insurance, to just adding a bike onto your home insurance policy?”
