Frequently asked questions
The British Cycling member discount is automatically applied to all policies purchased from the British Cycling bike insurance page.
A PROTECT-R policy covers you for road racing, closed circuit racing and crit/criterium racing, plus all events included in a PROTECT policy. For a full list of events click below.
Events coveredOur British Cycling policy doesn’t include personal accident or public liability cover. British Cycling “Premium” and “Member” members automatically benefit from this cover with a British Cycling membership. As a British Cycling member, you automatically benefit from public liability cover. British Cycling Premium Members additionally benefit from personal accident cover through their membership
British Cycling member benefitsNo, only the policy holder needs an existing British Cycling membership. They can insure all the bikes in their household under one policy, regardless of other members of the household having a British Cycling membership or not.
We apply the Sold Secure lock rating system to our policy requirements; it’s easy to follow and used by the cycling industry – www.soldsecure.com.
Locks are rated for their level of security. You must use a Sold Secure Gold or Diamond lock.
If your Sold Secure approved U lock comes with an additional wire cable, the cable is not included in the approved rating, it’s just the lock. This means that if you secured the bike through the frame to an immovable object, with the cable only, you wouldn’t be covered!
If you leave your bike unattended away from your home, it’ll need to be locked. There’s times at home too, depending on how you store it, so check out our Locking guide for full details on our requirements.
Locking requirementsThere’s no limit on new for old with every Bikmo bike insurance policy, so it doesn’t matter if the bike is 3, 5 or 10 years old, you choose the value to insure for, and you’ll pay a premium based on that value.
We always recommend insuring for the current replacement value, and the value you state is the maximum value you’ll receive in the event of a total loss and successful claim.
So, if it’s a custom build or you’ve upgraded parts, simply add up the sum of the bike and parts, including pedals, with what it would cost to purchase them at today’s RRP, as doing this ensures that you’ll have enough cover if you need to make a claim.
How to value your bike for insuranceYes – you can make as many changes and as often as you wish to the insured values/bikes on your Bikmo Cycle Insurance policy, with no fees for doing so, you just pay for the change in premium if there’s an increase. So if you’ve bought a new bike or treated yourself to a groupset upgrade, make sure your covered for the right amount.
If you’ve moved house, you can update your address too.
All of your adjustments can be made in your Bikmo Cloud account 24/7 – get in touch via our Contact page if you have any specific questions.
Yes – all Bikmo bike insurance policies cover your bikes whilst in transit when you travel with it by train, boat or plane. However you’ll need a GO or PLUS policy to cover accidental damage in transit.
Airlines generally only ever pay up to £1400 for any items damaged or lost in transit and you could be tied up in a waiting list to get your bike repaired. So we’ll repair or replace your bike regardless of the outcome of airline compensation.
Check out our travel policy if you need extended cover for your travels and make sure to see which cycling activity level is required.
https://bikmo.com/uk/partners/british-cycling/travel/Home and contents insurance can often differ to specialist cycle insurance so it’s important you check the policy wording carefully. Typical exclusions with home insurance policies include low maximum bike value, no cover away from home, no accidental damage cover, and no clothing + gear cover.
But with Bikmo? We have you covered because we know what cyclists need.
