Electric Bike Insurance FAQs

My e-bike has more than a 250w motor, will you still insure it?

No – with our electric bike insurance policy, we can only cover pedal assisted electric bikes that have a maximum continuous rated power output of .25 kW (250 Watts), are restricted to 25 km/h (15.5mph) and are not defined as a ‘mechanically propelled vehicle’ (MPV).

If you use a de-restrictor kit, your e-bike can be propelled without you pedalling or your e-bike motor has more power as standard, then your insurance will be invalid.

If you’re not sure, get in touch with the team.

Are my e-bike’s battery and motor covered by the policy?

Yes and no – you are covered for damage sustained to your electrical drive train during an incident with your Bikmo Electric bike policy, including the battery, motor, gearbox and control system, in addition to theft and vandalism.

However, we don’t cover system faults resulting from electrical or mechanical failure which is not linked to an incident. These types of failures should be covered by a manufacturer’s warranty for a given period of time, normally a minimum of 12 months.

We recommend speaking with your retailer or the manufacturer directly to discuss warranty coverage, the potential for extended warranty and the extent of the coverage.

What are the locking requirements for my e-bike?

We apply the Sold Secure lock rating system to our policy requirements; it’s easy to follow and used by the cycling industry – www.soldsecure.com.

Locks are rated for their level of security, and we set a value of bike that is covered by each rating: Bronze (up to €300), Silver (€301 – €1700) and Gold (over €1700).

If your Sold Secure approved U lock comes with an additional wire cable, the cable is not included in the approved rating, it’s just the lock. This means that if you secured the bike through the frame to an immovable object, with the cable only, you wouldn’t be covered!

If you leave your bike unattended away from your home, it’ll need to be locked. There’s times at home too, depending on how you store it, so check out our Locking guide for full details on our requirements.

I plan on using my e-bike abroad on holiday, am I covered?

Yes – your Bikmo e-bike Insurance policy cover includes worldwide cover for 90 days a year. That even includes theft or damage whilst you’re travelling and your bike is in transit.

If an airline trashes your bike before you get there, you’ve peace of mind with our alternative cycle hire benefit too.

You don’t even need to let us know, just go ahead and enjoy your break!

I ride carefully, do I have to have cover for accidental damage?

Yes – all of our Electric Bike and Cycle Insurance policies cover accidental damage as standard. That includes accidental damage whilst riding, if someone else causes you to have an accident or even if you damage your e-bike during transit.

In 2020, our customers made more claims for accidental damage than theft. It’s often overlooked as a benefit, as we’re more aware of theft stories in the media than Joe Bloggs slipping on a greasy corner on his morning commute.

We don’t currently offer any Bikmo cycle insurance policies without accidental damage cover, as we feel this is one of the main risks of bike ownership and a key benefit of our cover.

I ride an electric mountain bike – can I get insured?

Yes – our Electric Bike insurance policy includes e-bikes of all disciplines, so you’re covered whether you ride trails, park, gravel or for your commute.

We even include events as standard with all policies so you’re covered if you choose to enter an e-mtb enduro. Just make sure it’s fully charged before you head for the great outdoors as they’re hard to pedal when the battery dies!
