Mission

Protection

We exist to protect all riders, their rides, and the world in which we ride.

We do this by removing the barriers that prevent them from riding freely , meaning more riders – the world over – riding more.

We’re now over 8 years into our mission to enable anyone, anywhere, to protect their lifestyle, so they can spend more time enjoying it. And, become the brand that resonates with and protects the passion and drive behind the bike and adventure sports community.

Using business as a force for good

Our planet needs responsible people and businesses to step up and meet the challenges it faces. For us, that means focussing not just on profit but continuing to put people – customers, team and society – and the environment as high on our priority list as profit when making business decisions.

Global behaviour is also changing and consumers are choosing to engage with businesses which represent their personal values as well as meeting their requirements of a product or service. We hope what we stand for, and our actions, will resonate with the bike and adventure sports communities and enable us to become the go-to brand to protect their lifestyle.

Bikmo + BCorp

In September 2019 we certified as a BCorp! For those not in the know, it’s a rigorous process that assesses and independently verifies our activities as a business right from corporate governance through to social impact and team benefits.

We chose to become certified because the core of our business is enabling customers to ride more, providing all the well-known benefits that cycling gives us, including better health and a cleaner environment. We also have a lot of respect for other BCorps in their way of doing business, including well-known brands such as Patagonia, Burton and Innocent.

Bikmo + 1%

We believe bikes are the solution to many of the world’s problems which focussed our mission on protecting the worlds’ cyclists. But there’s only so much we can do alone and there are some amazing people and organisations doing great things we want to support.

In 2020 we fulfilled our aim of joining 1% For The Planet, providing a great framework for our philanthropic activities as a small but growing team. It’s a great organisation and well known brand that is helping us structure how we give back.

Impact Report 2020

Words are easy but action is hard. The proof that any business is acting in a responsible way should be in frequent and transparent reporting of their activities.

After certifying as a BCorp in 2019, 2020 was our first full year as a BCorp when we started putting more focus into setting targets and monitoring how we performed against them.

This culminated in the release of our first impact report in March 2020 covering where we hit and where we missed.

Open Project

Transparency is not a word often associated with insurance. We’re looking to change that – it’s better for customers and competition.

We’ve run the Open Project since 2017 at Bikmo, lifting the lid on our claims statistics, and it’s interesting to see the shifts over time.

We predict the customers of tomorrow will ask more questions about the companies they spend their money with and where it goes. We want Bikmo to be surfing that wave rather than stuck behind it.

2021 Goals

Each year we set 3 clear goals linked to our longer term mission to protect the worlds’ riders. We hit 2 out of 3 last year so this we’re we’re aiming for a clean sweep.
1
Punch way above net zero
We will hit net zero in Q2 2021 so our target for the end of 2021 is to put in place a strategy and start to execute, using science based targets, a plan to create a positive impact on our planet through our operations as a business and network of customers and partners.
2
Support local retailers
It was a goal set in 2020 and this year will be a big leap forward in getting towards our target of putting £10m per year back into local cycle retailers by 2023. Steps include a dedicated claims team, more decision making and a wider network of retailers to partner with.
3
Engage + inspire locally
Alongside support for World Bicycle Relief and Trash Free Trails through 1% For The Planet, we want to create impact locally. Our target for 2021 is to engage directly with 1,000 riders through Bikmo events and ask how we can support our local cycling community.
