Ireland’s Cycling Scene: What Our Claims Data Tells Us

-

Cycling in Ireland has been on the rise, with more people than ever hopping on their bikes to commute, explore, and enjoy the outdoors. While bike sales may fluctuate, Irish riders are getting out there rain or shine, and we’re here to make sure they’re protected when things don’t go to plan.

Now in its fifth year, our Open Project gives you a look behind the curtain at our insurance claims data. It’s all about transparency, helping you understand where risks lie, and how to keep your rides rolling.

Here’s what our 2024 data tells us…

71% of incidents happened away from home, while just 29% occurred at home.

Most cycling risks don’t happen in your shed or garage – they happen out in the real world: on your commute, locking up outside the shops, or enjoying a weekend spin.

While some home insurance policies may offer limited bike cover, it usually only applies when the bike is stored at your registered address and may exclude incidents away from home. Specialist cycle insurance fills that gap, covering theft, accidental damage, or crashes no matter where your ride takes you.

In Ireland, commuting riders led the way at 44% of claims, followed by e-commute riders at 23% and road riders at 22%.

It makes sense: riding daily in traffic, leaving your bike in public spaces, and braving all kinds of weather increases exposure to risk. Each riding style brings its own challenges, which is why cover tailored to the way you ride is so important.

Good news: overall claims in Ireland remain steady, but the breakdown tells an interesting story:

Accidental damage has seen a slight shift, now making up a larger share of claims than vandalism, while theft remains the most common reason riders need insurance.

In 2024, 78% of claims were approved, with 22% declined. That means most riders are getting the support they need when it matters most.

E-bikes are booming in Ireland, but eligibility issues are now a common reason for declined claims.

Before hitting the road, make sure your e-bike meets coverage requirements—motor limits, speed caps, and usage types. We’re here to make it simple.

Ireland’s cycling scene continues to grow: more e-bikes, more accidental damage, and thefts still driven by inadequate locking. But it also tells a positive story: people are riding more and integrating bikes into daily life.
