YOUR NEXT CHALLENGE

Travel insurance for professional athletes training and competing all across the globe

Travel with confidence

We know insurance isn’t going to be highest on your list of priorities – but having confidence that you’ve arranged suitable cover will hopefully remove any uncertainty, unwelcome distractions and costly oversights – keep your mind on the next big race.

Professionals Covered

Most disciplines can be covered as part of this policy from road to track. Unlike most travel policies, this includes professional activities including those where you receive financial reward or gain.

Medical Expenses

If things go kaput and you end up needing treatment a long way from home you can be confident that you don’t end up with a significant medical bill to add to your woes.

Repatriation

Getting you back home to your family following a serious accident or (we’re sorry to get all morbid) in the event of your death overseas.

Cancellation + Curtailment

Reimbursement for lost travel and accommodation expenses should life throw a significant spanner in the works forcing you to change your best-made plans.

Your Belongings

Your bikes and kit are likely to need their own policy (check out our awesome bike insurance), but the other items you take add up and replacing them can be an absolute pain.

Positive Covid-19 Test

If you test positive for Covid-19 within 14 days of departure or mid-trip, there is support to help manage the financial impact and disruption.

Multi-Trip Cover

The policy is suitable for any number of trips taken during a 12 month period, with maximum trip duration options of 45 or 60 days.

24 hour Emergency Assistance

No matter where you are, or what time of day, if you have an emergency or need travel advice there is an expert helpline open with invaluable support on offer.

Key things to consider

Tell us what activities you have planned

There are a number of lower risk activities included as standard within the policy – its a long list including Eton Fives, Ten Pin Bowling + Tug-of-War – but its quite limited on the cycling front.

You’ll need to disclose Category 1 if you are taking part in any of the following:

  • Road Cycling
  • Track Cycling
  • Cyclocross
  • Cycle Speedway
  • Duathlon
  • Ironman
  • Triathlon

You’ll need to extend further to Category 2 if you are taking part in any BMX racing or training.

And at the highest end of the scale you’ll need to extend even further to Category 3 if you are taking part in Mountain Biking (competing on designated tracks).

Unfortunately this policy is not suitable for any stunt events, including BMX stunt riding or extreme downhill mountain biking.

The full list of acceptable activities and applicable categories will be provided within the policy wording, but please discuss with us if you have any questions or concerns to help ensure you select the right level of cover.

We appreciate that you may spend some time off the bike while you are on your travels and you’ll need to make sure you consider any other activities you are taking part in to make sure these do not need separate disclosure. For any winter sports you will need to add an optional winter sports extension to the policy in addition to disclosing the appropriate category.

Working out when you are going and when you need cover

Single trip policies are available, but often if you are travelling frequently and conducting the same activities each time then a 12-month multi-trip cover will probably be better value.

Remember that you’ll want cover to be operative from the date you book your travel just in case circumstances arise where plans need to be amended or a trip needs to be cancelled altogether.

Its also vitally important that your policy is not due to expire before the intended return date of a trip (you need to take extra care with multi-trip policies here). If the policy period expires before your scheduled return journey the whole trip would fall outside the parameters of the policy.

Working out the maximum duration of any one trip

The maximum duration of any trip is 45 days as standard, this can be extended to 60 days though if required.

A crucial consideration here is to factor in that a trip starts when you leave your permanent home address in the UK, and only ends when you return to your permanent home address in the UK.

So if you are travelling to back to back competitions – and you do not intend to return home in between – this will all be defined as one trip

Thinking about all the equipment and gear you will be taking with you

The limits for personal baggage under this travel policy are relatively limited, restricted to £2,000, including a maximum total of £400 for valuables.

This policy is not designed for insuring your bikes (they are far too valuable for that!). You should certainly consider purchasing bike insurance with worldwide protection in order to look after your bike – our Cycle insurance products are a good place to start.

Any valuables exceeding the limit, or any gear in excess of the total £2,000 limit may be better insured on a worldwide basis under your home insurance policy.

Missing a scheduled event or competition

The travel policy contains token compensation for baggage delays, travel delays and missed departures. The limits for these sections of cover will not make up for the pain, disappointment and financial impact of missing a booked event.

Unfortunately we are not able to link the cover to specific events that you are travelling to attend or compete in, and insurers will not be able to provide compensation for the impact of missing events.

Equally, if an event is cancelled, or rescheduled the policy will not provide any support for any booked travel or accommodation that is cancelled or additional costs faced due to alterations as a result.

Any domestic travel you plan to take

Travel within the UK – subject to the same duration limits – will be automatically insured within this policy provided that you have pre-booked paid accommodation for a minimum of 2 nights.

A nice little extra if you’ve travelled to a training camp hundreds of miles from home and you need to head home in response to an unexpected emergency.
