Ah, autumn, I love this time year when the intensity of the summer slackens off and gives you a chance to revaluate and plan new projects for the new season. It also means that you have no idea where you stand with the weather and can literally expect most meteorological outcomes. On the back of this Northern Hemisphere phenomenon and to make sure you aren’t caught short on your autumn cycling adventures, here is a trusty edit of apparel and accessories you might well need!

Adidas Wind Jacket – £50

One thing you can expect on an autumn ride is wind. It might not be that cold in temperature but that wind can bring it down and having a light-weight wind jacket like this one from adidas, will shield you from those battering gusts.

Gore Arm Warmers - £26.99

All hail the life saver of autumn rides, the noble arm-warmer. You pull them on when you get chilly and pull them off when you’re hot. I’m always surprised at how much of a difference they make, just to take the edge off a cool breeze.

Vulpine Merino Base Layer - £55

Merino wool is such a staple of my base-layer wardrobe. It’s a magic fabric that just keeps you that bit warmer but isn’t itchy or scratchy like the chunky-knit kind of wool we all know. Having a thin, merino base layer will keep your core warm and dry enough to keep you out pedalling for longer. Perfect for the winter too.

This Vulpine base layer is the perfect choice.

DHB ¾ tights - £38

A mid-length capri leg is the perfect half-way house between summer and winter riding. You don’t want to go out in shorts but you also don’t want to wear a pair of heavy duty full-length tights. I would spend less money on these, like this pair from DHB as they are a transitional garment for those in-between season rides.

TSH Merde Cap - £14

This ‘Merde’ cap from the geniuses at TSH sums up the autumn so well – the rain clouds and expression on the peak relate to all those times you’re out riding and get caught in a rain shower. This will definitely happen to you at some point this autumn so you might as well wear a cap that anticipates it! C’est le vie!

Gore Fingerless Gloves - £28

The autumn is still warm enough to go fingerless in my opinion and wearing a pair of gloves like these will stop you from slipping off the handlebars when your bar tape gets soggy in the wet weather.

Rapha Overshoes - £65

Overshoes will be an investment that will last you into the winter and you want to make sure you buy a pair that will keep your feet warm and dry. Once your feet go on a ride, you’re in big trouble – the amount of times I’ve had cold, wet feet and it’s felt like the end of the world – this year I will be avoiding it with some substantial overshoes to keep my little trotters from misery, like these Rapha ones.

Lastly, don’t let the autumn hold you back – enjoy the beautiful golden leaves and the fresh air!
